Crowne Comedy The sequel
As promised here is my take on the gig that went down last night at the Crowne Plaza in Rosebank.
We got to the venue way earlier than usual, and decided to grab a drink and see who’s there to mingle with, this is regular practise when going to a comedy gig, they always start late, and unfortunately, this one was no different. The show was supposed to start at 20:00 but at 20:15 some of us, and the comics were still standing outside. When the gig eventually got underway, Rabin got things going by talking crap, as you do.
Rabin is the mastermind behind this gig, he is part of a company called Comic Revolution. Rabin is a great guy, and a good comic.
Anyway, after Rabin had introduced the MC, Mr. Dave Levinsohn, Dave got on stage and rocked the crowd, and got them heated up for the first act.
Julio Garcia got on stage, from the word go, you could see that Julio is used to talking to people, but he eventually mentioned he hasn’t been on stage in about 2 years, and for that big a gap, I’d say Julio did bloody good, but he also realised that practise makes perfect.
Then to end off the first half of the show, Melt Sieberhagen got on stage, and as an Afrikaans comic performing in a larney hotel in Jo’burg he had a bit of a challenge ahead of him, he stormed the crowd and they loved it, Melt got off stage and that was the end of the first half of the show.
I had a quick chat with Melt in the interval, and he told me this was possibly one of the best gigs he’s done in a while.
Back to comedy shows always being late, the interval was supposed to be 15 mins, but ended up being 35 mins long.
So the second half started and Dave had a tough task of getting the crowds’ attention back to the stage, which he did brilliantly. First act for the second half was Lazola Gola, yes he is the little brother of Loyiso Gola, but don’t blame him, it isn’t his fault. Laz also had a good set, and the crowd adored him, putting a new young and vibrant swing on things.
Last act for the night was the CEO (Chicken Experience Officer) of Nando’s back in the day, Kagiso Lediga, also a screenwriter etc. so we know this guy is creative, by this time, it was just past 22:00 and the show should have been finished by now, and Kagiso just started his set, and in my opinion, the headlining act has the hardest job of the night, by this time the crowd was getting loud distracted and tired. But Kagiso pulled it of, this just supports my theory of him being a great comedian.
So all in all, it was a good night, the sponsors Lovoka (like Lovodka, but with a silent “D”) kept the crowd entertained by giving away some merchandise, which included towels, lighters, caps and T-Shirts. People love getting free stuff.

Crowne Comedy
Right, I have posted on some of my favourite comics, well, here is my favourite comedy gig at this stage.
Crowne Comedy, or on Twitter : #CrowneComedy
This gig has been running for a few months. Once a month some of the best comedians come together and make an exclusive crowd (200 people give or take) wet themselves laughing. Never have I been at #crownecomedy that there has been a bad or not-funny comedian. This month should be no different, because on the 2nd of February 2012 Crowne Plaza brings you the following acts : Kagiso Lediga, for those of you don’t remember him, he was the guy that ripped off Trevor Noah for being the new “CEO” of Cell-C. Also joining the Crowne comedy scene is Melt Sieberhagen, which I have featured in my blog before. Another new face to the Crowne Plaza is Julio Garcia, and last but definitely not least, Jason Goliath, is a new face, but rocked the crowd at crowne since his very first appearance at #crownecomedy.
And of course the host, they call him the host with the most, Dave Levinsohn is the host once again, let’s see if he can keep the crowd entertained yet another night.
Then, as if good comedy wasn’t cool enough? Crowne Plaza got an awesome sponsor, Lovoka. Free shot of Lovoka with every ticket booked.

Alyn Adams, gigantically funny.
This weeks featured comic is Alyn Adams.

Alyn has been entertaining crowds since 1994, with witty thoughtful, and mostly intelligent comedy. His routines include observational comedy with a surreal twist, surprising tales from history, song parodies and emergency jokes; the common thread running through all his humour is bizarre mental gymnastics.
In 1996 and 1997, he performed in Durban, Johannesburg and Grahamstown with the smash-hit Durban Poison Comedy Roadshow (revived in 2006), and was also invited to work on the Smirnoff International Comedy Festival
in Cape Town (1996/1997) and Durban (1997). In 1998 and 1999, he presented his solo 90-minute stand-up
show, Rant Boy, at theatres in Johannesburg, Durban and
Grahamstown. It was subsequently nominated for a Vita
Award.

Alyn is a popular act on the Gauteng club circuit, appearing
regularly at Parker’s Comedy and Jive in Montecasino,
Parker’s Comedy Express at Carnival City, Nomad Comedy
shows all over Gauteng. He’s
equally at home doing a set or MC-ing an evening, having appeared frequently as the host of several venues, including The Blues Room (Sandton), Parker’s Comedy and Jive (Fourways), and Bubba J’s (Atlasville).
He also appears at the occasional rock festival, having
been the band BOO!’s intro-comic-of-choice for more than
a decade. In 2009, he won Acapella Productions’ “Easiest
Comic to Work With” Award.
In January 2011, Alyn was one of the comics invited to
perform at Whacked Management’s inaugural Comics’
Choice Awards, at the Teatro in Montecasino, Joburg.
He collaborated with rock guitarist Martin Rocka to present a
new parody song, Jesus Don’t like Racists.
Alyn has been a member of the Joburg Comedy Cartel since
it launched with a successful tour to Durban in October 2010.
In April 2011, he performed with his fellow-JCC members in
the Hooters Comedy Tent at the Splashy Fen Music Festival,
to unanimous crowd acclaim. He was the resident MC at the
New Year’s Smoking Dragon Festival in the Drakensberg, in
December 2011.He writes a weekly newspaper column for KZN’s Sunday
Tribune called Headspace, and can also be found on
Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/#!/alyn.adams) and
Twitter (@alyndenzel).
I met Alyn the first time at the Comedy Underground, Cool Runnings Melville, which has sadly closed down now. Since then, we have been good friends, and Alyn has taught me a lot about being a comedian. So all in all, Alyn is a cool guy, even cooler comic, and larger than life, if you do run into him, offer to buy him a beer and have a chat, this man has got stories to tell you, and keep you busy for hours.
Melt Sieberhagen, legend funny man.
This, My first blog post is dedicated to the man that has been there right from
the beginning of my comedy career, he is pretty big in the comedy scene in SA, and well, he is pretty big physically, he is the one the only and the ever funny
Melt Sieberhagen
Just as his name suggests, Melt is an Afrikaans born South African, or as some souties call us, Dutchmen, yes I am one too.
With a uniquely South African opinion and attitude Melt rocks any and every stage he gets on, be it comedy or television. Melt studied drama, and then started working as presenter, actor, editor, and later on director. He has also starred on the big screen with some of the titles being: Oh Shucks I’m Gatvol (sounds like some souties when Melt gets on stage), Poena is Koning, where Melt showed us that white men CAN’T dance, and apparently he was in the international hit District9, I always knew Melt was a bloody prawn.
Melt started doing stand up comedy in 2006, and hit it big by winning the Jozi Comedy Showdown, which gave him stage time at the Jozi Comedy Festival. Melt also has a special weapon up his sleeve, it’s called Hannes Brummer.
Here is a taste of what Melt has to offer:
Together Melt and Hannes form The Flying Dutchmen, touring the country, making people laugh cry and get them mad, but in the end, it’s all just a joke, and these guys can handle any situation, well almost anything, tequila is evil.
Now that you know the history of a good comedian, and even better friend, let me tell you about the man personally, he got me into comedy, all it took was a few Facebook messages, and a short drive to, the now closed, Tings ‘n Times in Hatfield, Melt is one of the friendliest, nicest people I have ever met, being quite well-known for who and what he is, I thought that he would be like all other entertainers that I have met up to that point, rude and egoistic, Melt was anything but, we had a good chat and Melt told me that the only thing that matters is stage time, practise makes perfect, right?
You can find Melt on the interwebs : on twitter @MeltSieb
and Facebook http://www.facebook.com/fokweet
This genius of a man has a one man show coming up soon, make sure not to miss it!
